Pavement Distress & Surface Preparation Fundamentals
A 15-minute technical lesson: how to recognize alligator, block, longitudinal, transverse, and edge cracking, potholes, raveling, rutting, oil spots, and depressions; what causes each; which treatment typically fits; what sealcoat can and cannot do; and why surface preparation and the weather window decide whether the job lasts.
You will be able to
- Identify common asphalt distresses by sight and name the likely cause of each.
- Separate surface distresses from structural distresses.
- Match each distress to the treatment that typically fits: crack seal, crack fill, sealcoat or other surface treatment, patching, infrared, or full-depth repair.
- Explain what sealcoat does and does not do.
- List the surface preparation steps and weather checks that decide whether a treatment lasts.
